How Judo Shaped My Life and Eating Habits

I signed up for a judo class thinking it was all about big throws and fancy flips.

I soon realised that couldn't be farther from the truth.

Training taught me to focus under pressure, stay clam when things get tough, and respect the process as much as the win.

Those lessons shaped who I am today, but they also brought an unexpected challenge.

To compete, I had to stay within a strict weight class.

There was no flexibility.

If you missed the number on the scale, you didn’t fight. That single requirement turned food into something I couldn’t take lightly. Every meal became part of the competition.

At first, I did what most desperate athletes do: I tried every miracle diet I could find online.
One week it was cutting carbs, the next it was endless bland meal prep.

Some plans told me to eat so little I couldn’t concentrate in training; others buried me in complicated recipes I didn’t have time to cook.

What should have been simple nourishment became a daily battle between hunger, guilt, and performance.

Eventually, I realized that if I wanted to keep loving my sport, I had to build something better.

I started searching for what worked around long school days, late practices, and early morning weigh-ins.

That’s when the internet noise hit me.
Every search, every forum, every video was packed with
“Don’t eat after 7 p.m.,”
“Cut all sugar or you’ll never lose weight,”
“Drink only lemon water for three days,”
“Carbs are the enemy,”
and “If it doesn’t hurt, it’s not working.”

These ideas were everywhere, repeated like facts, and I believed them for a while.
But each one left me more confused, tired, and frustrated.
Nothing worked the way they promised.

So I blocked out the chatter and kept testing what actually helped.
I built quick meals that tasted good, simple habits that fit my life, and eating patterns that kept my energy high without stress.
Those experiments turned into a system I could trust….flexible, practical, and strong enough to support both my training and the rest of my life.

Those same habits stayed with me after the competition ended.
They’re the reason I can handle a full schedule of work, travel, and everyday responsibilities without slipping back into extremes.
No crazy restrictions.
No guilt.
Just a balanced approach that lets me enjoy food and stay healthy.

Now I teach these habits to people who are done with fad diets and food rules.
Health shouldn’t feel like a chore…it should give you the freedom and energy to enjoy life.

I don’t really share these systems often.
